Puntland Leaders Urge Unity Amid Political Transition

Puntland leaders have intensified calls for unity, dialogue, and political stability as the semi-autonomous region navigates a crucial period of governance transition, with concerns growing that prolonged political disagreements could affect institutional progress and public confidence.

At the forefront of the appeal is Deeq Darajo (Deeq Hassan Mohamed), the spokesperson of the Puntland Democratic Party (PDP), who has urged political leaders and stakeholders to place the region’s long-term interests above political differences. He stressed that maintaining peace and cohesion is essential to safeguarding the gains Puntland has made in governance, development, and democratic processes.

Speaking on behalf of the party, Deeq emphasized that political competition should not undermine the institutions that serve the public. He noted that while differing opinions are a normal feature of democratic governance, disagreements must be managed through dialogue and mutual understanding rather than confrontation.

“Dialogue remains the most effective mechanism for resolving political disputes and ensuring that differences do not hinder institutional development,” Deeq said, adding that leaders have a responsibility to preserve stability and strengthen public trust during periods of transition.

The PDP spokesperson warned that prolonged political tensions could distract attention from key development priorities and weaken confidence in governance structures. He called on all political actors to exercise restraint, embrace constructive engagement, and work collaboratively toward solutions that benefit the wider population.

Through its communications office, the Puntland Democratic Party reaffirmed its commitment to reconciliation efforts and inclusive political participation. The party said it remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote peace, cooperation, and democratic governance across Puntland.
Deeq also appealed to traditional elders, civil society organizations, youth leaders, and members of the business community to actively contribute to efforts aimed at preserving unity and fostering dialogue. According to him, sustainable development can only be achieved in an environment characterized by political stability, social cohesion, and strong institutions.

His remarks come at a time when Puntland continues to undergo important political and governance processes. As discussions over the region’s future direction continue, Deeq maintained that unity, inclusivity, and respect for democratic principles will be critical in ensuring a stable and prosperous future for Puntland and its people.
