South Africa Recalls Ambassador After Zuma’s India Visit Sparks Diplomatic Row
South Africa has recalled its ambassador to India after he was photographed accompanying former President Jacob Zuma during a visit to the country.
Zuma was seen at a temple with Ajay Gupta, a businessman accused alongside his brothers of using close ties to Zuma’s government to influence senior appointments and secure lucrative state contracts.
Zuma and the Gupta family have denied wrongdoing.
The controversy has prompted Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola to propose stricter rules for overseas trips by former presidents. They could be required to provide detailed travel information so officials can assess potential diplomatic, political, security and reputational risks.
