Tanzania Targets $1 Trillion Economy as Samia Unveils Vision 2050 Roadmap

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has officially launched the implementation framework for the country’s National Development Vision 2050, marking the beginning of an ambitious long-term plan aimed at transforming Tanzania into a competitive, inclusive and resilient upper-middle-income economy with a projected GDP of US$1 trillion by 2050.

The framework was unveiled during a ceremony at State House in Dar es Salaam, as neighbouring Kenya prepares to launch nationwide consultations for its post-Vision 2030 development blueprint on August 12, highlighting renewed momentum in East Africa’s long-term economic planning.

President Samia introduced a comprehensive package of implementation, coordination and monitoring mechanisms designed to ensure the successful delivery of Vision 2050.

The strategy places the private sector at the heart of Tanzania’s economic transformation through increased investment, industrialisation, job creation and sustained economic growth.

According to government planning documents, the private sector is expected to finance approximately 70 per cent of the investments required to achieve the Vision’s objectives, underscoring the importance of creating a more competitive and investor-friendly business environment.

The implementation framework follows the launch of Dira ya Taifa ya Maendeleo 2050 in July 2025 and coincides with the rollout of Tanzania’s Fourth Five-Year Development Plan, the first medium-term plan aligned with the new Vision.

During the event, President Samia also presided over a high-level public-private dialogue that concluded with the signing of a Joint Declaration between the government and business leaders.

The agreement is intended to strengthen collaboration in implementing the Vision and accelerating the country’s economic transformation.

The Tanzanian leader reaffirmed her government’s commitment to improving the investment climate, removing barriers to business and ensuring that the Vision delivers tangible economic benefits to citizens.

Her administration has consistently identified the private sector as the primary engine of Vision 2050, while positioning public investment to create an enabling environment that supports enterprise, innovation and long-term growth.

Vision 2050 succeeds the Tanzania Development Vision 2025, under which the country achieved significant milestones, including attaining lower-middle-income status in 2020.

The new blueprint outlines an ambitious development agenda centred on industrialisation, infrastructure expansion, innovation, productivity, competitiveness and enhanced private-sector participation.

Key investments in energy, transport, logistics, manufacturing and other productive sectors have been identified as essential to achieving the Vision’s long-term targets.

For the 2026/27 financial year, Tanzania estimates development financing needs at TZS 86.3 trillion, with the private sector expected to contribute TZS 60.1 trillion, representing 69.6 per cent of the total investment required.

President Samia further directed planning and investment agencies to intensify public awareness campaigns to ensure Tanzanians understand the Vision’s goals and actively participate in its implementation.
