Akonnor Promises Mass Changes as Gor Mahia Target Vipers SC

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has promised a tactical reshuffle and a squad rotation as his side prepares for their second Group Stage match of the 2026 CECAFA tournament against Ugandan side Vipers SC tomorrow in Kigali.

The high-stakes clash is scheduled for a 3pm kick-off, where we will be looking to secure a victory that would punch our ticket to the semi-finals of the regional showpiece.

Speaking during the pre-match press conference in Kigali today, the Ghanaian tactician made it clear that his squad depth will be on full display.

“The next game (against Vipers) will be approached with different tactics. Every single player in this squad will have a chance to play,” Akonnor stated confidently.

“By the time we leave here, we want to have a fair idea of the kind of players we have and who can start at any given game.”

While emphasizing the team-first mentality, Akonnor took a moment to single out left-back Mohamed Siraj for special praise following his stellar performance in the 5-0 win against APR.

The defender was a rock at the back and provided vital width going forward, earning glowing reviews from his boss.

“I think he did very well… We had a lot to talk about with him and also to encourage him. He has a rough idea of what we expect of him.

“Siraj is in a very good position to play and to get his chance. To be fair, we are all here and all these guys have to perform. They should be given a fair chance to play,” Akonnor stated.

With a win all but guaranteeing a spot in the semi-final, Gor Mahia will be eager to maintain blistering form. Vipers, however, are expected to provide a stiffer test and Akonnor’s tactical tweaks will be crucial in neutralising the Ugandan outfit’s threats.
