Speaker Wetang’ula Recognises Wandayi’s Parliamentary Leadership With EGH Award
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has honoured Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi with the prestigious Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.) award, recognising his contribution to Kenya’s public service and parliamentary democracy.
Wetang’ula presented the honour to Wandayi on Thursday, October 8, 2026, and later shared the development on his official X account, praising the Cabinet Secretary for his distinguished record of service.
The Speaker said the award recognised Wandayi’s leadership and contribution to Parliament, particularly during his tenure as Leader of the Minority Party in the National Assembly before his appointment to President William Ruto’s Cabinet.
“His steadfast leadership, commitment to democratic ideals, and dedication to public service remain exemplary and continue to inspire many people,” Wetang’ula said.
From Ugunja MP to Cabinet SecretaryWandayi rose to national prominence through his long parliamentary career, having represented Ugunja Constituency in the National Assembly and served in senior leadership within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
As Minority Leader, he was at the centre of parliamentary debates, legislative scrutiny and oversight of the government, often leading the opposition side in holding the Executive to account.
His transition from Parliament to the Cabinet followed President William Ruto’s appointment of him as Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, moving him from the legislative arm of government to the Executive.
He now oversees one of the country’s most strategic economic sectors, covering energy policy, petroleum affairs and efforts to strengthen Kenya’s energy security.
Wetang’ula praises Wandayi’s public service recordIn conferring the recognition, Wetang’ula highlighted Wandayi’s contribution to parliamentary democracy and public affairs, describing his leadership record as exemplary.
The Speaker noted that Wandayi’s commitment to democratic principles and public service had made a lasting contribution to Kenya’s political and governance landscape.
The recognition also marks a notable chapter in Wandayi’s transition from opposition leadership in Parliament to serving in the government he once scrutinised from the Minority side.
The Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.) is one of Kenya’s national honours awarded to individuals in recognition of distinguished and outstanding service to the nation.
Wandayi’s recognition comes as he continues to serve in the Energy and Petroleum docket, a critical portfolio amid government efforts to expand energy access, strengthen electricity supply and address challenges affecting the cost and reliability of energy in Kenya.
