The Senate Majority Party has removed Tabitha Karanja from the position of Deputy Senate Majority Leader and replaced her with Veronica Maina in a leadership shake-up announced on Wednesday.
In a communication to the Senate, Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed that Maina had taken over the position with immediate effect following a resolution passed by the Majority Party.
The decision was communicated to the Speaker through a letter dated November 3, 2026, from Senate Majority Whip David Wakoli.
According to the Speaker’s communication, the resolution to remove Karanja was passed during a Majority Party meeting held on Tuesday, November 3.
The letter was accompanied by minutes of the meeting and a duly signed list of senators supporting the resolution, as required under the Senate’s Standing Orders.
Kingi said he had verified the correspondence and supporting documents before formally communicating the leadership change to the House.
” The correspondence and the attached minutes indicate that a resolution was passed by the Majority Party to remove the Deputy Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Tabitha Karanja, in accordance with Standing Order 22(5),” the Speaker said.
He added that the party had elected Maina to replace Karanja at the same meeting.
Under Standing Order 22(5), a senator elected to a majority party leadership position can be removed through a majority vote of all senators belonging to the party.
Standing Order 22(7) further requires the decision to be communicated to the Speaker in writing, accompanied by minutes of the meeting at which the resolution was reached.
The Speaker is then required under Standing Order 22(8) to verify the correspondence and communicate the decision to the Senate within three sitting days.
The latest changes affect the office of the Deputy Senate Majority Leader, one of four leadership positions elected by senators belonging to the Majority Party.
The other positions are Senate Majority Leader, Senate Majority Whip and Deputy Senate Majority Whip.
Maina’s appointment takes effect immediately, according to the communication signed by Kingi and dated November 4, 2026.
