Nairobi Begins Installation of 50,000 Solar Streetlights in Citywide Upgrade
Nairobi is installing 50,000 new solar-powered streetlights and rehabilitating a further 50,000 faulty lights in a citywide programme targeting 100,000 functional streetlights.
Installation works are ongoing in Githogoro, Runda, along Gitanga Road towards Kawangware, Mamlaka Road and Argwings Kodhek Road, with additional streets and highways expected to benefit.
The programme combines the installation of new lights with the repair of existing infrastructure to expand street lighting coverage across the capital.
The improved lighting is expected to enhance security, ease movement at night and support businesses operating after dark.
The city administration said the initiative is intended to improve access to public spaces, strengthen neighbourhood safety and support economic activity by making streets more accessible after sunset.
Solar-powered lighting is also expected to expand illumination across residential areas and major roads as the city works to restore faulty streetlights and install new ones.
The programme targets improved lighting coverage across Nairobi neighbourhoods, although the timeline for completing the 100,000-light target and the total cost of the project were not provided.
