Gor Mahia Pocket Ksh1.69 Million as 4-2 Win Over Murang’a Seal Draws 5,340 Fans
Gor Mahia kicked off their FKF Premier League title defence in style, raking in Ksh1,693,100 in ticket sales after a thrilling 4-2 victory over Murang’a Seal at Nyayo National Stadium on Tuesday night.
The defending champions confirmed that 5,340 tickets were sold for the season opener, marking their first league match played at night in more than a decade.
In a statement following the encounter, Gor Mahia treasurer Gerphas Okuku thanked supporters for turning up in numbers and backing the team as they began their campaign for another league crown.
“A big thanks to every fan who showed up for our FKFPL League season opener against Murang’a SEAL tonight (Tuesday) at Nyayo Stadium. A great turnout for a night match; your support helped us collect Ksh1,693,100 from ticket sales, with 5,340 tickets sold,” Okuku said.
The impressive gate collection was matched by an entertaining performance on the pitch, with Charles Akonnor’s side racing to a commanding four-goal lead before Murang’a Seal mounted a late comeback.
Alpha Onyango set the pace in the fifth minute with a well-taken free-kick, giving Gor an early advantage.
Shariff Musa doubled the lead four minutes after the restart before Jackson Dwang’ produced a stunning long-range strike from beyond 40 yards to put the champions firmly in control.
Musa then completed his brace with a header, extending Gor Mahia’s advantage to 4-0 and seemingly putting the contest beyond Murang’a Seal’s reach.
However, Murang’a Seal refused to go down without a fight, with Josphat Lopaga scoring twice in the 75th and 80th minutes to reduce the deficit and set up a tense finish.
Gor Mahia held on to secure all three points, ensuring their title defence began with a statement victory.
The result sent Akonnor’s men to the top of the early league standings as they set their sights on a second consecutive FKF Premier League title and a record-extending 23rd league crown.
