Four Dead, 16 Injured as Brake Failure Sends Manure Lorry on Deadly Rampage in Meru

At least four people have died and about 16 others sustained injuries after a lorry carrying compost manure lost control and rammed into pedestrians, motorcycle riders and several vehicles along the Meru-Nkubu Road.

The tragic accident occurred at around 9 pm on Thursday, October 8, in the River Land area of Meru town, as the lorry descended a steep slope towards Nkubu.

According to police, the lorry was travelling from Makutano towards Nkubu when it reportedly suffered brake failure, leaving the driver unable to control the heavily loaded vehicle.

The truck reportedly gathered speed as it descended the slope before crashing into a stationary Toyota matatu, then ploughing into pedestrians and motorcycle riders who were by the roadside.

In the ensuing chaos, the lorry struck two other vehicles, both Toyota Sientas, before overturning onto its left side, bringing the deadly journey to an abrupt end.

Police and witnesses confirmed that four people died in the crash, while approximately 16 others suffered injuries of varying severity.

The injured victims were rushed to Meru Level Five Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

The extent of their injuries had not been immediately established.

Traffic officers from Meru, accompanied by the Imenti North Sub-County Police Commander, responded to the scene and coordinated rescue operations as emergency teams worked to assist the victims.

The crash left several vehicles damaged and raised fresh concerns over road safety, particularly on steep sections of highways where brake failure can have devastating consequences.

Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, including the reported brake failure and the lorry’s mechanical condition, as part of efforts to establish the exact cause of the crash.

Motorists have repeatedly been urged to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, maintain braking systems and exercise caution when navigating steep descents to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
