Eight Injured After Building Collapses in Maomboleo, Kisumu
Eight people have been injured after a building collapsed in Maomboleo, Kisumu County, on Monday morning, September 21.
The Kenya Red Cross said its response teams were deployed to the scene to assess the situation and assist with the rescue operation.
In an update issued after the incident, the organisation said six of the injured victims were treated at the scene, while two others who were in critical condition were evacuated to hospital for further treatment.
“All residents have been successfully evacuated from the building,” the Kenya Red Cross said, adding that a multi-agency response team remained at the scene as emergency personnel assessed the situation.
The cause of the collapse had not been established by the time of publication, with authorities expected to provide more information as investigations and the emergency response continued.
The incident comes months after another building collapsed in Kisumu, raising renewed concerns over construction safety and compliance with building regulations in the city.
In May, a six-storey building under construction collapsed at Tom Mboya Estate, killing one person and injuring several others.
The structure reportedly came down after heavy rains hit the area.
The deceased was a caretaker working at the construction site near Obunga Police Station.
One other person was rescued and taken to hospital as emergency teams searched through the debris for possible survivors.
The latest incident adds to a series of building collapses reported across the country, prompting increased scrutiny of construction practices and adherence to safety standards.
The National Construction Authority (NCA) has previously intensified inspections and enforcement operations targeting buildings suspected of violating construction regulations.
The Authority has also raised concerns over projects allegedly being undertaken by unqualified individuals posing as professionals, warning that such practices could compromise the safety and structural integrity of buildings.
