Eastleigh Building Collapse: Two More Bodies Recovered as Death Toll Hits Four

Two more bodies have been recovered from the rubble of a collapsed building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, bringing the number of bodies retrieved to four as rescue operations enter their 14th day.

The latest victims, an unidentified adult woman and a man, were recovered during overnight operations in the early hours of Thursday, November 5, 2026, according to a police incident report from Eastleigh North Police Station.

Police said the first body was retrieved at approximately 1:30 am, followed by the second at around 3:30 am.

Both bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition. Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers processed and documented the scene before the remains were transferred to Nairobi City Mortuary for post-mortem examinations and identification.

The latest recoveries follow two earlier discoveries on October 30 and November 3, bringing the cumulative number of bodies retrieved from the site to four.

Four people have also been rescued alive since the building collapsed on October 23.

However, the whereabouts of several people reported missing following the disaster remain unknown.

A verification exercise conducted by the Kenya Red Cross and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had established that 16 people remained unaccounted for.

Investigators are reported to have used mobile phone data to establish that nine of the missing individuals had been at the building shortly before it collapsed.

The number of people feared missing has fluctuated during the rescue operation.

On November 2, National Disaster Management Unit Director Duncan Ochieng said the figure had dropped from 16 to 11 after five people previously reported missing were reunited with their families.

The figures reflect different stages of the verification process and do not necessarily represent the number of people confirmed to be trapped beneath the rubble.

Earlier, rescue teams indicated that at least 10 people were believed to be trapped in the building’s basement, where accessing the lower sections of the wreckage has proved challenging.

Multi-agency rescue teams continue to clear debris and search for survivors and victims, as anxious relatives gather near the scene awaiting news of their loved ones.

The latest discoveries have renewed concerns among families whose relatives remain unaccounted for nearly two weeks after the collapse.

Authorities are expected to rely on post-mortem examinations, forensic analysis and DNA profiling where necessary to establish the identities of the recovered victims.

The advanced state of decomposition has made forensic identification particularly important in determining whether the deceased are among those reported missing.
