Activists Set October 26 Date for State House March Over Fuel Prices
Human rights activists have announced plans to march to State House, Nairobi, on Monday, October 26, 2026, to protest rising fuel prices and the high cost of living.
In a notification letter to the National Police Service dated Thursday, October 22, the Coalition of Human Rights Defenders said demonstrators would assemble along Kimathi Street before proceeding to State House.
The coalition said the protest would highlight the impact of rising fuel prices on household expenses and the affordability of essential goods and services.
“We undertake to promote peaceful and orderly participation and to respect the rights of the public throughout the demonstration,” the group stated, pledging to comply with the law.
The planned march comes a week after another group of activists issued the government with a 72-hour ultimatum to respond to demands for lower fuel prices, warning of nationwide protests if their concerns were not addressed.
The group, led by lawyer John Ndegwa, announced plans to escalate its campaign by collecting one million signatures in support of lower fuel prices.
Activist Nicholas Oyoo vowed that the campaign would continue until authorities addressed Kenyans’ concerns over the rising cost of living.
The activists also criticised matatu association leaders who met President William Ruto at State House in Mombasa in May, accusing them of failing to secure lower fuel prices after suspending a planned strike.
Oyoo accused the leaders of misleading Kenyans by suggesting that their engagement with the President would lead to reduced fuel costs, yet transport operators were now considering fare increases.
The planned demonstrations come amid growing public concern over fuel prices and their impact on transport costs and the prices of essential commodities.
