The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially declared the position of Commission Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) vacant, inviting qualified Kenyans to apply for the role ahead of the 2027 General Election.
‎
‎In a notice published on July 28, the commission said the successful candidate will be appointed on a four-year contract, renewable once for another four years subject to satisfactory performance.
‎
‎The Commission Secretary and CEO will serve as the accounting officer and is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the electoral body’s secretariat, making the position one of the most influential within the institution.
‎
‎The recruitment comes at a critical time as the IEBC prepares for the 2027 General Election, with the incoming CEO expected to oversee key electoral processes, including voter registration, procurement of election materials, management of election logistics and the implementation of commission policies.
‎
‎The vacancy follows the resignation of former CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan in February 2026. Following his departure, Moses Ledama Sunkuli was appointed Acting Commission Secretary and Chief Executive Officer and continues to serve in the position.
‎
‎The commission stated that applicants must be Kenyan citizens, hold a degree from a recognised university and have at least five years of proven management experience.
‎
‎Interested candidates have until 5:00 p.m. on August 11, 2026, to submit their applications via email to executiverecruitment@kpmg.co.ke, according to the commission’s notice.
‎
‎Additionally, candidates must also demonstrate experience in at least one of the following fields: electoral matters, management, finance, governance, public administration, law or political science and must meet the integrity requirements under Chapter Six of the Constitution.
‎
‎The shortlisted candidates will be required to present their original identification and academic documents, as well as clearance certificates from relevant government agencies during the interview process.
‎
‎The Commission Secretary and CEO play a central role in managing the commission’s operations, overseeing permanent and temporary staff across the country, supervising procurement processes and ensuring the smooth delivery of electoral activities.
‎
‎The recruitment also comes as the commission continues preparations for the 2027 General Election, with the incoming CEO expected to play a key role in strengthening public confidence in the country’s electoral processes through effective administration and transparent management of the secretariat.
