A routine security operation in Kanyonyoo, Kitui County, has led to the recovery of 48 rounds of AK-47 ammunition that had been concealed inside pieces of meat aboard a passenger bus travelling to Nairobi.
The ammunition was intercepted along the Thika–Garissa Highway by a Multi-Agency security team that stopped Zafanana Coach, a public service vehicle operated by Northern Cruz Sacco, which was travelling from Dadaab to Nairobi.
During a search of the bus, officers discovered a blue woven carrier bag placed on the overhead luggage rack serving seats 23, 24 and 25.
A closer inspection of the bag revealed pieces of meat concealing a black nylon package containing 48 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition, commonly used in AK-47 rifles.
The bus driver, Samuel Ngui Munyithya, and turnboy, Justus Muatha Kiola, were arrested after they were unable to account for the suspicious consignment or identify its owner.
The two suspects were taken to Kanyonyoo Police Station, where they remain in custody as detectives investigate the source and intended destination of the ammunition.
The bus has also been detained, while the recovered ammunition has been secured as an exhibit as investigations continue.
