Opposition Rift Deepens as Munya Says He Won’t Back Gachagua for President

‎Cracks within the Opposition have continued to widen ahead of the 2027 General Election after Party of National Unity (PNU) leader Peter Munya, hinted he would refuse to back former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua should the opposition select him as its presidential flagbearer.

Speaking during a live televised interview on August 5, 2026, Munya denounced Gachagua’s recent rhetoric regarding smaller political outfits in the Mount Kenya region, accusing the former deputy president of displaying “dictatorial tendencies” and using demeaning language against rival leaders.

“That’s why I am hoping he [Gachagua] is not a presidential candidate, because I would not support that kind of a person to run the country,” Munya said during the broadcast.

This comes amid heightened tension following comments made by Gachagua, who dismissed minor political parties in the region as politically valueless and referred to rival figures using disparaging terms.

“Those dictatorial tendencies are the same ones we are saying we don’t want in the current government. How can you call people miti, walking like sticks? I think there is something wrong with him and he needs to address that very urgently,” Munya added.

Munya’s sharp stance underscores the growing ideological and personal friction threatening to splinter Mount Kenya’s opposition front.

He maintained that strong leadership requires respect for institutional autonomy and democratic plurality rather than top-down coercion.
