The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced that payments to invigilators, supervisors and other personnel who participated in the 2025 national examinations will begin on Thursday, August 6.
KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere confirmed the payment schedule following growing concerns over delays in settling allowances for examination officials.
In a statement released on Tuesday, August 4, Basic Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa said the Ministry of Education had already transferred the required funds to KNEC to facilitate the payments.
“I informed the Committee that the Ministry has already disbursed the funds to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), and payments to examination personnel will commence on Thursday, 6th August 2026,” the PS said.
Ololtuaa made the remarks while appearing before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education, where lawmakers discussed the delayed payments for personnel involved in administering the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).
The announcement comes amid mounting pressure from teachers’ unions, which have expressed concern over the delayed disbursement of allowances to examination officials ahead of the 2026 national examination period.
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has repeatedly threatened to boycott this year’s national examinations if teachers who worked during the 2025 examination cycle are not paid their outstanding dues.
According to KUPPET, thousands of teachers are still waiting for their allowances despite Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi announcing more than a month ago that funds had been released for the payments.
