Safaricom has appointed Boniface Mungania as its Chief Financial Services Officer, effective November 1, 2026, following the receipt of all relevant regulatory approvals.
Mungania will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer, taking charge of the company’s financial services function at a time when digital financial services continue to play a central role in Safaricom’s business.
He brings close to 20 years of experience in financial services, digital transformation, customer care and business development, having built much of his career within Safaricom since joining the telecommunications company in 2007 as a Customer Care Representative.
Over the years, he has held several leadership positions, including Senior Manager, M-PESA Business Development, Head of M-PESA Products and Services Development, and Payments Tribe Lead. He also served as a Mobile Financial Services Consultant at Vodafone Qatar before taking up the role of Director of Public Sector Digital Transformation at Safaricom.
During his career, Mungania has been instrumental in developing and scaling financial services innovations that have changed how customers transact, save and access financial products.
In his most recent position, he led nationwide digital transformation programmes supporting the development of Kenya’s digital infrastructure across agriculture, healthcare, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and public finance.
His work also contributed to the development of key digital utilities, including application programming interfaces (APIs), digital identity and national payments systems, which support the delivery of digital services across different sectors.
Mungania has also championed the adoption of agile working practices to strengthen innovation and operational efficiency across the organisation.
His contribution to Safaricom and national transformation programmes earned him several accolades, including the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW), a national honour recognising his role in leading transformative initiatives.
Academically, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree and is pursuing a Master of Science in Entrepreneurship at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
Safaricom congratulated Mungania on his appointment, expressing confidence in his leadership as he takes over the financial services function.
