Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha has officially joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), ditching the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Governor Badilisha was received on Wednesday, July 29, by party leader Rigathi Gachagua and designated Secretary General Senator John Methu, during a consultation forum in Wamunyoro.
The move adds to the growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders continuing to position themselves ahead of the polls.
While announcing Badilisha’s entry into the party on Wednesday, Gachagua noted that he was pleased to welcome the Nyandarua Governor and members of the county assembly into DCP.
“I am delighted to receive Governor Kiarie Badilisha of Nyandarua County and the entire County Assembly into the DCP Party,” Gachagua said in a statement.
The former Deputy President said Badilisha and the county assembly members had committed to defending their seats on DCP tickets in the next General Election.
“They have assured me that they will defend their seats on DCP Party tickets, and they shall form part of the aspirants in the party primaries next year. I have assured them that the party primaries will be free and fair,” he said.
Gachagua said the leaders from Nyandarua had joined the party because they shared its vision and were responding to what he described as the call for the liberation of Kenya.
“The people of Nyandarua County, led by their governor, have brought a message of goodwill from the people of Nyandarua County; they are answering the call for the liberation of Kenya. To them, the future is green,” he said.
The DCP leader also claimed that the party was continuing to attract leaders from other political formations, particularly UDA.
“The mass exodus from unpopular parties, notably the infamous UDA, continues,” Gachagua said.
Badilisha becomes the second governor from the Mt Kenya region to join DCP after Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, who last week announced his move from UDA to Gachagua’s party.
