Police in Nakuru have recovered bhang worth an estimated Sh7.2 million after an SUV ferrying the illicit consignment was involved in a road accident along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
The incident occurred between Shinners Boys and the Mbaruk area after a Mazda CX-5, registration number KDW 640U, reportedly lost control while attempting to overtake and collided with an oncoming Scania trailer.
The impact caused the SUV to spin and sustain extensive damage to its front section.
The driver, however, abandoned the wreckage and fled the scene.
While processing the accident scene, officers from Nakuru Central Police Station discovered six sacks containing bhang inside the vehicle.
The narcotics weighed 241.5 kilogrammes and had an estimated street value of Sh7,245,000.
The recovered exhibits have since been secured, while detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) in Nakuru have taken over the investigation.
Police have launched a manhunt for the driver, who remains at large.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the recovery underscores its efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and bring those involved in the illicit narcotics trade to justice.
