Dandora Woman Arrested After Allegedly Subjecting 8-Year-Old Daughter to FGM
Police in Nairobi have arrested a 32-year-old woman after she was allegedly caught subjecting her eight-year-old daughter to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Dandora Phase 2.
The woman, identified as Frolence Ngendo Nyambura, was reportedly confronted by neighbours after they raised the alarm while she allegedly carried out the procedure on the minor using a surgical blade.
Officers from Dandora Police Station, accompanied by the Sub-County Children Officer, responded to the scene and confirmed the incident.
The suspect had reportedly been restrained by members of the public before she was handed over to the police.
The traumatised child was rescued and rushed to Dandora Phase 3 Health Centre, where she received medical treatment before being discharged in stable condition.
Authorities subsequently placed the girl in a safe home to facilitate her recovery and protect her from further harm.
The suspect is being held at Dandora Police Station and is expected to face charges under Section 19(1) of the Prohibition of FGM Act, 2011, as well as cruelty to a child under Section 14 of the Children Act, among other charges.
The National Police Service said it remains committed to protecting children from abuse and bringing those responsible for FGM and other forms of violence to justice.
The Service also said it will continue working with child-protection agencies and communities through intelligence-led investigations and other interventions aimed at preventing FGM and safeguarding children’s rights.
