Safaricom Launches Ksh100 Shariah-Compliant Ziidi Investment Fund

Safaricom has expanded its investment portfolio with the launch of Ziidi Shari’ah Money Market Fund, giving customers access to a Shari’ah-compliant investment option from as little as Ksh100.

The fund, launched on October 6, 2026, in partnership with GulfCap Investment Bank (GCIB), targets customers seeking investment products that comply with Islamic financial principles, while also opening the option to anyone interested in ethical investing.

Customers can access Ziidi Shari’ah through the My OneApp or by dialling *334#, with subsequent top-ups starting at just Ksh10.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said the product was designed to deepen financial inclusion by providing investment solutions tailored to different customer needs and values.

“With Ziidi Shari’ah, we are making investing simple, affordable and accessible, while providing an option that aligns with the values that guide our customers’ lives,” Ndegwa said.

Unlike Safaricom’s conventional Ziidi Money Market Fund, the new fund operates independently and invests strictly in Shari’ah-compliant instruments.

According to GCIB, the fund invests in short-term, highly liquid instruments held in Shari’ah-compliant banks, with returns generated from permissible activities rather than interest, or riba.

GCIB CEO Saud Shahbal said the product would enable Muslims and other ethical investors to grow their savings while remaining aligned with their values.

The fund is regulated by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) and overseen by GCIB’s Shari’ah Supervisory Board.

Investors can track their daily profits through the digital platform, deposit funds at no cost and withdraw money to their M-PESA wallets without a withdrawal charge.

Safaricom has also introduced a fund-locking feature to encourage disciplined saving and limit unplanned withdrawals.

There is no maximum investment limit, although customers remain subject to M-PESA transaction limits, including a daily limit of Ksh500,000 and a maximum of Ksh250,000 per transaction.

The launch further strengthens M-PESA’s transformation from a payments platform into a broader digital financial services ecosystem, allowing millions of customers to save and invest directly from their mobile phones.

With a Ksh100 entry point, Safaricom is positioning Ziidi Shari’ah as an accessible investment option for customers looking to start small and build their wealth gradually.
