Four arrested as police seize cannabis worth Sh1.77 million in Busia, Bungoma
Four suspects have been arrested after police recovered more than 66 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa in separate anti-narcotics operations in Busia and Bungoma counties.
In Busia, detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigation Bureau (NANIB), acting on intelligence, intercepted a Fuso lorry, registration number KDU 981Y, along the Busia–Kisumu Highway.
The lorry was transporting cereals to Nairobi when officers conducted a search and discovered 14 bales of cannabis concealed beneath dry cassava.
The drugs, packed in two sacks, weighed 59.15 kilogrammes and had an estimated street value of Sh1,774,500.
Two suspects, Evans Josiah Mugambi and Moses Murambula Odwera, were arrested during the operation and taken into custody.
In neighbouring Bungoma County, officers from Bungoma Police Station intercepted a grey Toyota Probox, registration number KCK 089M, during patrols along the Siritanyi–Mateka Road.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of five bales of cannabis weighing seven kilogrammes. The consignment had been wrapped in yellow tape and concealed inside a sack.
Police arrested two occupants of the vehicle, identified as Boaz Kwamba and Peter Ndungu, in connection with the illicit consignment.
The four suspects remain in custody as police process the cases ahead of their arraignment in court.
The two vehicles and the recovered narcotics have been secured as exhibits as investigations continue.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the operations form part of ongoing efforts to disrupt narcotics trafficking networks and bring those involved to justice.
