Kenyan Marathoner Philemon Kiplimo Kimaiyo Handed Two-Year Doping Ban Over Chlortalidone‎

Kenyan marathoner Philemon Kiplimo Kimaiyo has been handed a two-year ban after admitting to an anti-doping rule violation involving the prohibited substance chlortalidone.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced that the 27-year-old road racing specialist will be ineligible to compete from September 1, 2026, until August 31, 2028.

Kimaiyo’s competitive results from July 19, 2026, onwards have also been disqualified, meaning he will forfeit any medals, titles, prize money, ranking points and appearance fees earned during the period.

According to the AIU, Kimaiyo provided an out-of-competition urine sample in Mwaita, Kenya, on July 19, 2026.

Laboratory analysis subsequently returned an adverse analytical finding for chlortalidone.

Chlortalidone is classified by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as a specified diuretic and masking agent.

The substance is prohibited at all times under the World Anti-Doping Code because diuretics can increase urine production and may be used to mask the presence of other prohibited substances.

The AIU said Kimaiyo did not have a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) authorising the use of chlortalidone.

It also found no evidence of irregularities in the collection, handling or analysis of his sample that could have accounted for the adverse finding.

In his response to the AIU, Kimaiyo admitted taking medication belonging to his wife approximately one week before providing the sample.

He said he had taken the medication to relieve pain and discomfort following long training runs.

Kimaiyo told investigators that he could not remember the name, appearance or other identifying details of the tablets he had taken.

He also disclosed that he had used unidentified vitamins and dietary supplements.

Despite establishing that Kimaiyo had committed an anti-doping rule violation, the AIU determined that there was no evidence that the offence was intentional.

Because it was Kimaiyo’s first anti-doping rule violation, the AIU applied the standard two-year period of ineligibility rather than the longer sanction that can apply where an athlete is found to have deliberately used a prohibited substance.

The suspension comes at a significant point in the career of Kimaiyo, who had developed into one of Kenya’s notable international road and marathon runners.

He won the 2019 B.A.A. Half Marathon in Boston before adding victories at the 2021 Bahrain Night Half Marathon and the 2022 Prague Half Marathon.

Kimaiyo also finished third at the 2022 B.A.A. 10K and recorded an eighth-place finish at the 2023 Berlin Marathon, one of the world’s major marathon races.

His progress over the marathon distance continued in 2024 when he finished third at the Hamburg Marathon.

In 2025, Kimaiyo produced the fastest marathon performance of his career, clocking a personal best of 2:04:01 to finish second at the Hamburg Marathon behind fellow Kenyan Amos Kipruto.

He later finished eighth at the Chicago Marathon, further establishing himself among Kenya’s competitive marathoners on the international circuit.

The two-year suspension now prevents Kimaiyo from participating in sanctioned athletics competitions worldwide until August 31, 2028.

The AIU ruling remains subject to the applicable appeals process.
