DCI Hunts Rogue Police Inspector as Serving Officers Linked to Dr Victoria Mutiso Murder

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has intensified its hunt for a police inspector accused of playing a key role in the murder of psychologist Dr Victoria Mutiso, as investigators link serving police officers to what they describe as a meticulously planned assassination stemming from a longstanding land dispute.

Addressing a press briefing at Magereza House on Friday, August 7, DCI Director Mohamed Amin said investigations had identified the inspector, who is attached to Nderi Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station, as the crucial link between the alleged financiers of the killing and the team that carried out the attack.

According to Amin, forensic investigations established that a Jericho pistol recovered from Nderi Police Post was used to kill Dr Mutiso. Detectives said the firearm had been officially issued to the police inspector, who is currently on the run.

“Investigations have established that the elimination of Dr Mutiso was driven by a longstanding land civil dispute, detectives were pursuing additional suspects believed to have financed and coordinated the murder”, Amin said.

So far, detectives have arrested two suspects, including a police constable attached to Karinde Police Post, also under Kikuyu Police Station, whom investigators believe was the gunman.

Forensic evidence, including ballistic analysis, placed the officer at the scene and identified him as the person who fatally shot Dr Mutiso.

Investigators recovered two spent cartridges from the crime scene, while a bullet extracted during the postmortem examination provided critical evidence linking the recovered Jericho pistol to the shooting.

The DCI further identified another suspect as the alleged coordinator of the operation. Detectives say he drove the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado used to block the taxi carrying Dr Mutiso before the attack and directed the movements of the execution team.

Investigations established that two Toyota Prado vehicles were used during the operation—one to obstruct the victim’s vehicle and another to transport the attackers. Detectives traced the owners of both vehicles, who confirmed they had rented them to the prime suspect before they were returned on July 30, 2026.

Vehicle tracking records placed both SUVs at the scene of the shooting, while detectives also arrested a motorcycle rider alleged to have transported the suspected gunman to and from the crime scene.

Amin described the alleged involvement of serving police officers as a serious breach of public trust.

“Investigations led our officers to serving police officers who, unfortunately, played very critical roles in the conspiracy. A police inspector, the officer in charge of Nderi Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station, has been positively identified as the link between the financiers and the operational team, as well as the source of the murder weapon,” he said.

He vowed that the DCI would pursue all individuals involved in the murder, regardless of their position.

The latest developments come a week after Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor confirmed that Dr Mutiso died from excessive bleeding after sustaining three gunshot wounds during the July 29 attack in Nairobi’s Upper Hill.

The postmortem revealed that she was shot twice in the head and once in the upper back, resulting in fatal injuries to the head and chest.
