What began as an ordinary family visit in Shivagala took a dramatic turn when a man allegedly introduced his wife to his newly acquired second wife — only to receive a reception much hotter than expected.
According to a report filed at Malaika Police Station, Danston Isundwa Mmbhehi was at home on Sunday morning with his wife, Mary Mmbone Khalechi, when a woman identified as Fransisca Makhokha arrived carrying a young child.
In what may rank among the boldest family announcements of the year, Mmbhehi reportedly welcomed the visitor and proceeded to introduce her to his wife as his newly married second wife. To add further seasoning to the revelation, he allegedly informed his spouse that the pair shared a 16-month-old child.
Witnesses say Mary appeared remarkably calm.
Displaying what could only be described as admirable hospitality under difficult circumstances, she reportedly invited the guests into the house and excused herself to the kitchen, ostensibly to prepare tea.
What happened next was not included in any known cookbook.
Police reports indicate that after several minutes, Mary returned carrying a sufuria filled not with tea, but with boiling water. The contents were allegedly poured onto her husband, who at the time was holding the child on his chest.
The result was immediate chaos.
Both Mmbhehi and the child sustained serious burns and were rushed to Kakamega General Hospital for treatment. The child remains hospitalized in serious condition.
As neighbors attempted to process the sequence of events, the suspect reportedly left the scene and remains at large.
Police have launched investigations into the incident, with officers cautioning members of the public that while honesty in marriage is encouraged, timing and delivery may also be important considerations.
Meanwhile, relationship experts who definitely were not consulted for this story are advising anyone planning to unveil a surprise spouse to first confirm that all parties involved are seated, calm, and nowhere near a kitchen containing boiling water.
The case is under investigation by officers from Malaika Police Station.
