Kenyan Podcasters Generating More Views But Earning Less Money, Says Report

The Launch of the Creative Africa Intelligence Report (CAIR) podcast report has shown than African podcasts are generating stronger audience engagement than benchmarks in higher-paying markets ,yet receiving significantly lower advertising value, according to SemaBOX.

The Report (CAIR) 2026 estimates a “geography discount” of about $1.4 million across a sample of 330 podcast episodes and videos.

The report says the difference is linked to where audiences and creators are located rather than the quality of the content.

The report analysed 227 YouTube videos and 103 Spotify episodes published between June 2025 and July 2026. It estimates that the sample generated more than $900,000 in advertising value using rates available in the respective African markets.

At advertising rates in markets such as the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, the same audience attention would have been worth more than $2.3 million, according to the report.

The YouTube sample recorded a weighted engagement rate of 2.75 per cent, compared with a benchmark of between 1.5 per cent and 2.2 per cent in higher-paying markets.

More than 65 per cent of the YouTube videos analysed ran for between 60 and 120 minutes, while more than 68 per cent of the top-performing shows distributed their content in both video and audio formats. Despite this engagement, the report says the sample’s blended advertising rate was about 71 per cent lower than the comparator markets.

The report also found that access to platform-based revenue remains limited for African creators. During the study period, Spotify’s Partner Program was unavailable in all African markets, while YouTube’s Partner Program was available in 13 of Africa’s 54 countries.

Based on platform revenue-sharing terms, the report estimates that about half of the modelled advertising value would go to creators. At higher-market rates, the same content could support about 890 income equivalents of $100 a month over the 14-month study period, compared with about 352 at current rates, without additional views.

SemaBOX founder and chief executive Dan Aceda said African creators face structural barriers despite producing content that compares favourably in audience engagement.

“African creators are producing digital media that rivals global competitors in audience commitment and attention depth, yet they are not receiving the recognition or revenue they are due because of structural barriers,” said Aceda.

“The geography discount is our biggest challenge, but it is also our greatest opportunity. It is a valuation gap, and for global advertisers, investors and ad-tech developers, closing it offers a rare entry point into a fast-growing digital audio market.”

The report recommends wider access to monetisation programmes, greater investment in systems that connect podcast content to advertising demand, and improved transparency around advertising rates and creator payments.

It also calls on YouTube and Spotify to expand monetisation access in Africa, including a phased Spotify Partner Program pilot in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

The report estimates Africa’s podcast output at about 710,000 publications a year based on an estimated 10,000 open RSS feeds and 20,000 YouTube channels. It cautions that the figure has not been deduplicated and is a scenario rather than a measured total.

SemaBOX said the CAIR 2026 figures are modelled estimates rather than verified creator payouts or a measure of the total African podcast market.

The analysis used a sample selected partly by engagement and upper-end advertising rates, meaning the figures represent potential ceiling value.
