President William Ruto has appointed Nelson Marwa to be the Chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission.
Ruto in a gazette Notice Number 16248 appointed Marwa for three years.
The appointment takes effect October 16.
Margaret Wajiru’s appointment was revoked.
In August, Wanjiru notified Head of Public Service Felix Koskei of her intention to resign, saying she is ready to move on and focus on other work.
Wanjiru, a former Starehe MP, said her 20 months at the commission had been an important learning experience and thanked Koskei for giving her the opportunity to serve.
“During the 20 months that I have worked in NRC, I have learnt a lot, and I appreciate you for giving me this opportunity. This letter is therefore my 30 days’ notice of resignation. I will vacate office on Monday, August 31,” she said.
Wanjiru has already declared interest in Nairobi county’s top leadership.
Following Marwa’s appointed, Nairobi Rivers Commission CEO Brigadier (retired) Joseph Muracia welcomed him.
“Mr Marwa brings extensive experience in public administration, government coordination and security management to the Commission,” Muracia said in a statement.
Muracia said the appointment comes at a critical stage in the Nairobi Rivers Basin Regeneration Programme, as the Commission continues to coordinate efforts to restore Nairobi’s rivers, protect riparian reserves and promote a cleaner, greener and more resilient city.
“We look forward to advancing the Commission’s mandate under his leadership.”
Nelson Marwa, the outspoken and often controversial Coast regional coordinator, is a man who has rubbed shoulders wrongly with the most powerful politicians from his region.
Ironically, these are the same leaders he is supposed to work with to provide security.
After 24 years of rising through the ranks from a junior civil servant, to the all powerful security coordinator, there have been calls to have him appointed to the National Police Service as the Inspector General due to his no-nonsense approach to matters security.
Marwa, who has three master’s degrees, was born in Kuria, Migori county, and grew up in Tanzania and Uganda.
The son of a missionary started off as a junior district officer in Nyeri and has worked in several parts of the country, including Kinango, Rift Valley, and Mombasa.
