On-demand video streaming company Pesaflix has launched a music competition aimed at promoting local content production and expanding access to affordable video entertainment among Kenyan youths.
Operating across Kenya, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the platform unveiled the “Pesaflix Rap Challenge,” a one-minute freestyle music competition targeting emerging creators in the music and digital content space.
The challenge requires participants to sing or rap using official instrumentals, with cash prizes worth Sh250,000 up for grabs across the top 10 positions.
Speaking at Redbrick House on Mombasa Road on Thursday, May 28, Pesaflix Director of Innovations Fredrick Alunala said the initiative is designed to empower young creatives while supporting the growth of local digital entertainment content.
“This music competition is meant to complement the work that we do,” said Alunala. “Everything begins with awareness, but we are also interested in building capacity. We are doing this for social impact — to benefit users and young people by providing meaningful music content at a very affordable cost.”
He added that the deadline for submissions is May 30, 2026, while the grand finale and announcement of winners will take place on June 20, 2026, at a Nairobi hotel.
Founded in 2024, Pesaflix has positioned itself as one of the region’s leading on-demand streaming platforms through its unique micro-billing payment model. The platform allows users to rent or stream movies and video content on a pay-as-you-go basis using local mobile money services, eliminating the need for traditional credit cards or expensive monthly subscriptions.
According to Alunala, the platform was created to address frustrations experienced by many streaming users who pay for monthly subscriptions but rarely consume enough content to justify the cost.
“It becomes frustrating when a user pays for a monthly bouquet and then gets too busy to watch the content. Sometimes you renew a subscription without even watching more than a few movies,” he explained.
“These are genuine concerns, especially in markets like Kenya where affordability matters. We started researching how to build a video-on-demand solution that supports daily subscriptions and micro-billing, and that is how Pesaflix was founded,” he added.
The competition will also feature breakaway sessions focused on the opportunities and challenges facing video content production in Africa, while encouraging conversations around improving accessibility and efficiency in streaming services.
