Nigeria’s Senate has passed a bill proposing tougher punishments for road offences.
Under the bill, anyone caught selling goods, trading or preaching inside buses, minibuses and other public transport vehicles could be fined $33.
The bill now awaits President Bola Tinubu’s signature before it becomes law.
Drivers caught drinking and driving, speeding or ignoring traffic signs could be fined $66.
Drivers who refuse a roadside breath test could face a $33 fine, up to six months in prison, or both.
Lawmakers say the new penalties are meant to reduce road accidents and make Nigerian roads safer according to several local media sources.
